The Minesweepers of Bosnia

Unfortunately, this content is currently not available online.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - A forgotten country, with a forgotten conflict on the periphery of Europe. Another reason for the faltering search for mines: funds from abroad have decreased significantly. Other crises and conflicts have moved into the focus of the international community.

This year, the European Union is investing about 2.5 million euros in mine action in the country. Yet, defusing an anti-personnel mine costs around 20,000 euros. Laying them costs only 200 euros.

The figures show how real the danger remains: Since the end of the war, 612 people have been killed by mines in Bosnia. But the threat is global and also affects the rest of Europe. For mines and explosive material lie relatively easily accessible in minefields. And is thus a kind of self-service shop for terrorists.
